I've been a huge fan of Kathryn Casey's true crime books and have read all of them. She thoroughly researches each case that she features, interviews those who knew the victim(s) and perpetrator(s), and the perpetrator(s) themselves, whenever possible. She masterfully brings the key players in each case to life and this book is no exception.I was not familiar with this case prior to reading this book but found my heart breaking piece-by-piece as the perpetrator (Ana Trujillo) repeatedly took advantage and victimized the numerous people who genuinely cared about her and ultimately murdered a kind-hearted, selfless man with whom she previously had a "relationship" before brutally murdering him.Although I would not classify her to be as evil as Jodi Arias, she shamelessly tried to drag an innocent man's reputation through the mud in an effort to justify her crime.Kathryn Casey is one of the handful of rare true crime writers (like the late Ann Rule) who masterfully brings the characters and the story to life. Another great read and I highly recommend this book!
Oh my goodness, why does this book have to end. I started reading it the minute it became available and could not put it down. The story of this crazed woman is amazing. In my opinion, she was not even good looking, yet had some sort of power over men. Being single most of my life, I have to admit I have met women like her who think every man is in love with them, they don't want the man, yet they don't want anyone else to have him. She could not stand to lose and in my opinion Stefan told her to leave and not come back again and she went ballistic and brutally murdered him. She is the true meaning of a trashy slut who will do anything and walk on anyone to get her way. She delved into some sort of weird, bazaar spiritual existence that she molded to fit her own crazy ways, always wanting to hurt someone through her "powers," "voodoo," or in the end a brutal killing. My hat's off to Kathryn Casey (my favorite author!!) for doing such a thorough investigation and setting for the good and bad of both parties (although the only "bad" on Stefan's part was being too meager and drinking too much), and of bringing out the true ways of a very evil woman. Job well done Kathryn!!
Kathryn Casey never disappoints!!! I really enjoy her books, this is another favorite!!! She is one of the best true crime writers of her time!!! If you like true crime you need to get this book!! Be ready for a night of no sleep because this will keep you up all night!!
I remember hearing about this case on the news on TV. Kathryn Casey brought it all together for us....the who, why, and the outcome. Kathryn's research into the lives of Stefan and Ana and all involved with the investigation and trial is amazing. One can tell it takes a lot of time to get the research done. The book is full of details that looks into the weird world of Ana's fanatic witchcraft type religion and her outlandish behavior. And when these two things meet with Stefan's quiet, easy-going demeanor, it means disaster. Now, when I see women in 5 or 6 inch high heel shoes, I think of those shoes actually killing someone. :)Update: I was interested in the Rice Hotel that was a big part of the book. Kathryn Casey gave a good history of the hotel. I always remember the Rice Hotel being for the rich and famous during it's hayday. I have a distant older cousin who helped build the Rice Hotel. He lived here in Nacogdoches and was a builder/contractor and built a lot of the Nacogdoches buildings. :)
When a new Kathryn Casey books comes out she NEVER disappoints and the book Possessed is no exception. Her smooth writing style gives details but not so many that you get bogged down and want to flip thru the pages. This book is a fascinating insight into true craziness and self absorption. i read it in two days. could have read in one but didn't want it to end. If you love true crime this is the book for you.
I simply could not put this book down. Well researched and beautifully written, I think this may be Ms. Casey's best book to date.
Another winner from Kathryn Casey. I had read news reports about this murder when it happened, but was left with more questions than answers about this case. "Possessed" answered my questions and more. Love the research and attention to detail that went into writing this book. Kathryn Casey is a worthy successor to the Queen of Crime, Ann Rule.
At first, I couldn't understand how the book could be sooooo long. How much could really be said about this murder? Turns out, SO MUCH. I am obsessed with Possessed. I am breathlessly telling everyone about it. There are such interesting backstories on the two parties, and I can't believe I live in Houston and never knew any of these details! At a couple points in the book, it was a bit long-winded. And she didn't really trust the readers to remember details she had already discussed, repeating things several times. Slightly annoying, which is part of the reason I gave 4 stars.
