The author paints a tale of woe; being let go from high paying job, drinking too much and being overweight. He undergoes a self realization that he's living life in the wrong manner, kicks his bad habits and reinvents himself. The book is mildly amusing, but there is no major conflict. I recall he backslides a little when kicking one of his habits ( I'll let you guess which one) and becomes a born again athlete but I got the impression that this is more an invented conflict than a real down on your luck story.Bought it and read it because I was and still am like the guy in the title accept that I'm actually in my mid fifties. What I didn't like about it was that the author seems a bit of a pretentious snob, let go from a high paying gig, has a mild medical scare, is overweight and has a drinking problem. Goes on a self actualizing journey of discovery where he finds the true him, after losing all his vices, becomes a hero to his wife and fam, takes up some competitive swimming, and becomes a good, person, but also a total boar. Still if stuck on an airplane for a while, Still, it's worth a read and I could see enjoying it.
I like to go through all of the Kindle Limited Promotional Offers and grab books while they're free. However, this one actually seemed intriguing and I was interested, so I decided to read it right away.So here it goes. The storyline jumps back and forth and it is not laugh-out-loud funny at least as far as I read. I made it through the first three chapters and half of the fourth chapter. While it is clear the author, is not a natural writer, the story seemed intriguing. However hearing about a man's complete disconnect with how the world works, with the "story" of dropping his kids off at school, I was wondering what rubbish I was reading. To have the whole situation be interesting, some more zest could be added, but his description of events and situations are a bit bland and quite honestly I found the author coming off as arrogant and privileged to the point of excess. I hope he sincerely changed later in the book, but I couldn't get through the rest of the book for the life of me.I paid the right price for it and would have been sincerely disappointed if I had paid full price. If you are interested in reading this book, I recommend getting it from a library or borrowing it from someone who got it while it was free for the Kindle. I don't believe many avid readers would be challenged by the text or find it providing a new, interesting point of view. The idea is good, however, because of the execution, I'm having trouble getting through it and that is why it receives 3 stars instead of a lower rating as a result of not being able to find out whether it picks up or not.
I read this book during my version of Marsh's year off although, in my case, it hasn't been a year yet. What I enjoyed about this book the most were the reminders to take advantage of this stressful time to be a better Dad and husband. It's definitely a work in progress, and I haven't even returned to running but I'm hopeful.
This was a quick read but, surprisingly, I found it very inspiring. Nigel Marsh took a good look at his life and made some changes. Were they all permanent? Maybe not. Did he achieve everything he set out to do on his year "off"? Maybe not (another reviewer mentioned the ocean swim race). But that's how real life is, isn't it? My life certainly isn't perfect. Reading about his successful battle with alcoholism was especially inspiring and I appreciated his candor. The book was funny to boot.
This ebook was as a freebie for my Kindle. The cover art compelled me to download it and I was not disappointed. Yes, the author was a successful CEO of a company in Australia before being laid off, so he was not going to discuss being dirt poor during his hiatus - we know that right away. This man worked his way up to being a CEO, but at the expense of losing sight of what life is all about. He never had a chance to accomplish any personal goals other than work related. He loses his job and realizes there is another world out there. Sydney is a fabulous place to live and he makes me want to add it to my own bucket list as a place to retire to. He decides to stay unemployed for 10 months. He spends his time with his kids and developing his own personal bucket list. Other reviewers are unimpressed that this man was not in utter poverty because he supports a wife and four kids. But, not everyone that is laid off is going to be on food stamps right away. This man had obviously saved enough rainy day money to make his 10 month break possible. He spent his time travelling, taking his kids to games, etc. He opened his eyes and realized he was working without experiencing life. The 10 months allowed him to develop better bonds with his kids and wife. There is more to life than work.I can see why some people find him selfish and spoiled, but he does make some good points throughout the book I highlighted. His last message was to take the good with the bad in life because the bad helps you appreciate the good. Life should not be perfect.Anyone who can save money to be able to take time off for a year - should do it. Maybe it is harder right now in this economy, but it can be done with proper planning. I have known many people that have saved up and travelled the world for 6-12 months and never regretted the opportunity. Others have expressed to me that after being laid off - that year off was the best time in their lives. This book confirms for me that my goal should be to try to take some personal time and not let life pass me by before I am 40 and wonder where has the time gone by.
