“He gave into her hands a solemn charge—to help fellow-pilgrims along the road, filling her life with blessed interest, and healing her own deep sorrow by giving her power to relieve and comfort others.”-Susie Spurgeon, reflecting upon her life after Charles’s deathMost of us know the name of Charles Spurgeon, London’s most famous preacher, but few know the name (or story) of his wife, Susie. Yet she is well worth knowing. Susie wrote books, founded and managed a book fund for impoverished pastors, reared twin boys, and was instrumental in planting a church after Charles died—all while battling crippling health problems. She cultivated an exceptional romance with Charles and played a key role in his ministry. Her resilience, kind and generous spirit, and her love for Jesus and His Church will embolden you to aspire to more in the Christian life.In this definitive biography, Ray Rhodes does the work of a historian with all the grace and craft of the storyteller. Drawing from expert resources, as well as letters and other papers from the Spurgeons and their friends, he introduces you to this extraordinary woman. She was beloved in her time, but now because of this notable work, Susie will be loved by a whole new generation of Christians.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up. Susie: The Life and Legacy of Susannah Spurgeon, wife of Charles H. Spurgeon. The author, Ray Rhodes, is a friend. We have been acquainted for 20 years or so. I had no idea that he was such an excellent writer! I have been a fan of C. H. Spurgeon for as long as I can remember, so anything connected with him was of immediate interest to me. What a joy it was to read this volume and learn about the sweet relationship between this eminent pastor and his wife. I laughed, sighed, wept, and rejoiced as I read this volume. My life is the better for it. It is a wonderful read, hard to put down once when you get started. Thank you, dear friend, for writing this superb volume on the life of Susannah Spurgeon. And thank you Moody Publishers for printing this volume. We need more books like this one.
Before reading "Susie" I knew next to nothing about the wife of Charles Spurgeon. In fact, I knew very little of Charles's personal and family life. Ray Rhodes' wonderful biography of Suzie Spurgeon has changed that in many respects.I have read many biographies in my life, and while enjoying most all of them, many were mostly chronicles of events and dates. That is not the case here. Ray Rhodes takes us into the era of Victorian England, so very different than our times, and invites us to walk with Susie and see her life with Charles as though we were there ourselves. We read, see, and experience Susie's life and the impact is beyond words.Page after page there are rich details, and while I was eager to see what was on the next page, I also longed to linger on what I had just read. From beginning to end, the reader will experience the joys and sorrows of Susie's life. However, what stands far and above that is her love and devotion to God, Charles, her sons, and the many who benefited from her ministry and great kindness.Ray's style, thorough research, and respect to the lives of Susie and Charles Spurgeon, make this a rare gem among biographies. I highly recommend it, and feel completely confident to say you will grateful that you own and have read it yourself.
Susie: The Life and Legacy of Susannah Spurgeon, wife of Charles H. SpurgeonBy: Ray Rhodes, Jr."Charles Haddon Spurgeon's name became known, not just because he was a powerful preacher, but because his books and sermons were distributed widely in Britain, and, indeed, throughout the world by Mrs. Spurgeon's Book Fund" (p. 249).I truly believe this is a must-have book for every Pastor's wife, Christian wife, and teenage girl to read. Susie was a woman who always looked to God for comfort in her affliction (p. 220).This book is best summed up by Susie herself, who described her life's journey with Charles as “two pilgrims treading this highway of life together, hand in hand—heart linked to heart†and her trials together with Charles as “rivers to ford, and mountains to cross, and fierce enemies to fight, and many dangers to go through†(p. 220).Put an extra copy into your church library.
"Two pilgrims treading this highway of life together, hand in hand, - heart linked to heart." This was how Susie described her life's journey with her beloved husband Charles Spurgeon. After reading "Susie", I could not wait to have the hard copy in my possession. This has been an encouragement in my devotional life, family life, and ministry. Thank you Pastor Ray and all who helped in the publishing of this remarkable work. I anxiously anticipate the impact it will have on those who read it.
A well-written biography offers more than facts and details about one's life. Instead, it is a compelling account about an individual that inspires readers. That is what Ray Rhodes has done with his biography "Susie: The Life and Legacy of Susannah Spurgeon, Wife of Charles Spurgeon."The author simply traces Susannah's life primarily from her introduction to future husband Charles through her own death. He does well at capturing her motivations, her heart, and her perseverance. As a family who suffered many ailments, Rhodes offers some conjecture about what those may have been (based on logical deductions) but he does not merely dwell on that point but looks past to how Susannah Spurgeon glorified the Lord in spite of both her own and her husband's ailments. One will also see how she took hold of her role as a spouse and desired to be a helpmate to her husband and his ministry. This is the style that readers will find throughout the book; not only does the author merely talk about who Susannah was, but he brings it back to the Spurgeon's focus on bringing the gospel into the hearts of those they could reach.Rarely is a biography so well-written. Rhodes has done an incredible job and readers would do well to read this book. I would highly recommend it.Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher at no cost to me for the purposes of review. However, my review was not influenced by the author, publisher, or anyone else associated with this book and is the result of my own reading of it.
I bought this book as a Christmas gift to myself. I thought the author's style of writing was very squirrel-y. The biography was all over the place and the author had a habit of repeating himself several times sometimes within the same chapter. It just did not flow well. I sincerely struggled to finish the book as it was somewhat boring most of the time. There seemed to be a lot of fluff and filler. On another note, the author and his rendition of the people in Susie's life seemed to exalt Mrs. Spurgeon (even though they repeated many times that wasn't their intent). I am also curious of a certain bias being the book is published by Moody Publishers when in fact Mrs. Spurgeon gifted D.L. Moody with Charles' bible after her husband's death. Perhaps Moody Publishers turned a blind eye to the author's poor writing skills because of this connection. I am glad I read it, but was not impressed at all.
