Such a beautiful cover, and an engaging story to complement it. I loved the charming coastal setting with the abandoned cottage and little shops run by quirky inhabitants. The story switches between past and present, eventually unraveling the mysterious breakup of two lovers, while setting the stage for a new romance. This is book one of two in the River’s End series, but was perfect as a standalone.
Let me preface by saying I'm not the type to read romance stories normally. The usual romance is an eye-roller for me. However, I was bored and looking for something different, liked the title, decided to give it a try. The fact that I read the whole book (vs only the first 2-3 chapters - an author only has that long to get me hooked : ) tells me it's a better than average story. The characters were believable, the story flowed well, the conclusion was satisfying. I wouldn't say it was can't-put-it-down, but I did keep coming back.I liked the dual generational factor, with enough meat to the story to make it interesting all the way to the end. And I liked the setting - very believable. I will likely look for more by this author.
What a great book! I’m not going to recount the story outline, you can read that already. I am just stating my reaction to the novel. Basically this is a love story told over time in suspenseful bits and through mysterious clues. There is great sadness woven in, yet hope for a certain outcome also. The complex characters’ actions made me cry, or get angry, but the ending was satisfying. No spoilers from me though. Just know I felt impelled to write a review to encourage other possible readers to invest their time in this novel.
The Stationmaster's Cottage is a wonderful love story that spans three generations, intertwined to tell two separate love stories in one book. Along the lines of a Nicholas Sparks romance, it has all the classic elements: heartbreak, mystery, emotion, believability and intrigue. While the story itself deserves 5-stars, I rated it a 4, as having no breaks between paragraphs or dialogue, I found it difficult at times to determine who was speaking, or if a new paragraph had begun. However, the story itself is a very enjoyable read, and I look forward to more from this author!
I also grew up near the beautiful coast of Victoria Australia and loved growing up there. This was a poignant story of a couple kept apart by the well meaning lies of their family and friends. It was well told with the present interspersed with the past. A deeply moving tale with secrets and lies being uncovered by a woman keen on revealing the truth. A good read.
Thank goodness it's a rainy Sunday and I already have dinner in the Crockpot. I just don't want to put it down. I'm about half way through The Stationmaster's Cottage. It is one of those books you can't stop reading but never want it to end. What a terrific find. Haven't read this author before, but I sure will again.
The setting for this story is beautiful and the story is a heart touching that takes readers back generations. In the present, Christie Ryan was given a cottage after the death of her grandmother. the cottage isn't much to look at but the secrets hidden inside are what make this story of romance, mystery and courage. This is a well written story that is a good one to read when you feel like getting lost in the secrets of the past.
The cover drew me immediately – an old scroll, ribbon interlacing rings, a key and an old photo – were all elements that told a story of its own. This is a wonderful time-slip story set in a small town in Australia involving two love stories two generations apart and how they are entwined. Lovers of genealogy, history and romance will love this book. It uses an unusual layout and formatting which can be a bit distracting.
