Book Description
"There is no greater cause and no greater means toward the fulfillment of that cause than the spreading of the gospel of Jesus Christ and prayer. As a missionary, I know how deeply flawed I am and we are as missionaries and how much we need prayer. Pastor Eddie is tackling an incredibly important and strategic task of mobilizing and equipping the saints to pray for missionaries. Use this book. Share it with others. I highly recommend this important book for global missions." (Michael Oh, CEO and Global Executive Director of the Lausanne Movement)"Having served in overseas missions for a number of years now, I know how important it is to have a team of prayer supporters behind you. In this book, Pastor Eddie gives the reader very practical lessons on how to effectively support your missionaries in prayer. The personal stories within are illuminating to the real struggles and needs that missionaries face on a daily basis, and their need for intercessors. Praying for Your Missionary is a must have for churches and missionary supporters. I will be recommending it to all of my family’s supporters in hopes that they will use these guidelines to lift us up in prayer." (Ryan Klejment-Lavin, director of Footstool Missions Center)"Praying for Your Missionary is a great reminder, even for people in full-time ministry, that we all need to do our part to pray for our field workers. Pastor Eddie offers insightful, firsthand knowledge of the challenges that many missionaries experience in the field and when they return home. This book should be required reading for any church that sends and supports missionaries." (Alex Lim, director of Five Two Foundation)"As a cross-cultural worker focused on Northeast Asia, I am so grateful that a pastor has addressed the paramount issue of praying for missionaries. Pastor Eddie has written a book that is very thorough in addressing so many of the issues that many workers on the field struggle with. This is a book that I would want all of my supporting churches and supporters to read. The book addresses issues for beginning missionaries as well as for those who are ready to retire. If you know someone on the field and want to understand them, this is a must read." (Jamie Kim, executive director of Reah International)"Being a missionary in remote places in the world, I greatly appreciate prayer for my family and for our ministry. As Pastor Eddie shares in this book, sometimes our brothers and sisters in Christ forget about us as they do not see us on a day-to-day basis―out of sight, out of mind. People need a reminder to pray for us missionaries as we go out into a dark world to carry the light unto the lost peoples of this world. Pastor Eddie used to be my pastor and our family was greatly blessed by the church and the many ways they supported and encouraged us. He has lived out what was written in this book. As a missionary I would strongly encourage you to read this book and to get it into the hands of everyone in your church to faithfully intercede for all your missionaries." (John Woods, International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention)"This book has the potential to have a powerful and eternal impact in global missions work. If every church lived out what is outlined in this book, then I believe we would see a mighty harvest in missions work among the nations. I have been a missionary overseas for over fifteen years and appreciate the honesty and vulnerability that is shared in Praying for Your Missionary. There is a great need among the nations, and there is a great need for more prayer. I hope that churches everywhere would read through this book. Thank you, Pastor Eddie, for writing this. It truly is a gift to us missionaries. " (Jim Lyons, missionary in the Middle East)

This book is very simple, practical, and very necessary if you attend a church that supports a missionary or does mission work. Great to use for small group studies or missions training. It is also good for just general awareness of the necessity of prayer in all fields of missions and the needs of people who are on the front lines.
Fresh approach to encourage lay people to support and pray for the missionaries in foreign cultures.
I’ve seen it happen too many times: someone is sent out to another place to take the Gospel of Jesus to people in other locations, and after a flurry of emails and letters, they slowly become fairly forgotten. Or an indigenous evangelist and church-birther will visit and American church and rouse liberality and liveliness. But once they’re out of sight, they quickly go out of mind. Eddie Byun, missions and teaching pastor of Venture Christian Church in Los Gatos, California, and author of Justice Awakening and Praying for Your Pastor, has delivered a great tool for Christians and churches in his brand-spanking-new 192 page paperback, “Praying for Your Missionary: How Prayers from Home Can Reach the Nationsâ€. This little volume is user-friendly, prayer-friendly, missionary-friendly, and missions committee-friendly!Beyond the introduction and epilogue, Byun spreads out a twelve-chapter manual on how to, and why to, pray for our missionaries. The chapters follow an acronym he likes to use: “MISSIONS CAREâ€: more workers, intimacy with God, spiritual coverage, strong singles-marriages-families, incarnational love, oneness of teams, never-ending devotion, successful ministry in God’s eyes, churches partnering well, agencies partnering well, re-entering well, ending well. That could certainly be turned into a bookmarker or magnetic display for easy recall! Each chapter draws from Scripture, are full of exemplary stories, and conclude with very practical discussion questions, prayer points, and action plans. Byun is very insightful, and gave some applications that I had never thought of.This is the kind of book that should find its way into the hands of congregational missions committees, the person-in-the-pew, pastors, mission agencies, denominational and congregational leaders, and seminaries. It’s a great tool if you have a missions sermon series or conference and want to get your church onboard in synchronized praying for God’s world rescue operation. I’m handing my dog-eared-marked-up copy to our missions chairman and encouraging him to lead our missions committee through the book. I unashamedly commend “Praying for Your Missionaryâ€!I am very delighted that IVP sent me a copy of this book, at my request, used for this review. The only requirement they asked of me is that I give my honest assessment, which I have done. This appraisal is freely made and freely given.
“Partnering well in missions means we create a church culture in which we shelter our missionaries in prayers.†- p. 122“Kingdom culture in a church is a sending culture to the nations.†– p. 116I just returned to the States after serving in East Asia for the past 10 years. It was the most life-changing and challenging 10 years of my life.Eddie Byun writes a book that truly grasps the needs of the missionary today. He understands the real struggle and prayer needs of that person who has sacrificed everything to answer God’s call to go, serve and show Christ. This book effectively lays out to the normal church-goer a realistic prayer guide as well as opens their eyes to the daily as well as spiritual struggles of missionaries. If you are truly a follower of Jesus Christ then you are called to reach the nations. We all have a part to play. If you don’t go, then you send and this book tells you how to go about that in realistic and Biblical ways. Send your missionaries and through your prayers, financial support and words/actions of encouragement, prevent your discouraged missionaries from coming home. This book would be great for a mission board, small group or Christian individual who wants to grow in their awareness of those they send to the field. Each chapter offers discussion questions, prayer points and an action plan (or challenge). This book is worth your time and your consideration.
I pray that God will increase the Church's desire for missions and the effectiveness of missions through this timely book (Matt 24:14).
This book is a gem. It teaches us a simple and yet profound truth about how to reach the nations through our prayers for our missionaries. My prayers for missionaries have not been always so consistent, and it is many time because I forget what a crucial role I have in this. Missional engagement is always just a prayer away.
This book writes well how to partner with missionaries. Church sent out missionaries but mostly do not know how to partner with missionaries. Eddie covers well all the needs of missionaries in 12 chapters. He has been traveling to many nations so he himself experienced the struggles, problems, pains and joys of mission work. This book guides us and help us how to and what to pray for missionaries specifically. Moreover, he always guides us to turn our eyes on to Jesus in every issues he talks about!
A must read for every Christian and church that are supporting missionaries! Eddie does a nice job providing insight into the experiences of missionaries and how we can use that to effectively pray for them!
