Review

“Fins pulls readers into the futuristic fantasies, intramural fights and forward thinking of the legendary GM executive who revolutionized America’s love affair with the automobile.” (David Cay Johnston)Fins is a fascinating story, well told. Can’t beat that. (Inc.)“Fins is a lively study, as big and broad as one of GM’s Buick Roadmasters but as sleek and speedy as one of its Chevrolet Corvettes. It’s essential reading for anyone interested in America’s auto obsession.” (Los Angeles Times)“A rollicking tale about the years when Detroit design dazzled the globe and defined an entire era.” (Detroit News)“A terrific biography...Fins’ should prove a valuable history to have on hand as we enter the age of the autonomous vehicle.” (Wall Street Journal)

From the Back Cover

The New York Times bestselling author of Bitter Brew turns to the American auto industry, chronicling its birth and rise to greatness through the remarkable life of Harley Earl, the eccentric visionary who revolutionized the way cars were made, marketed, and even imagined.Harley Earl’s story qualifies as a bona fide American family saga. It began in the Michigan pine forests in the years after the Civil War, traveled across the Great Plains on the wooden wheels of a covered wagon, and eventually settled in a dirt road village in California called Hollywood, where young Harley took the skills he learned working in his father’s carriage shop and applied them to designing sleek, racy-looking automobile bodies for the fast crowd of the burgeoning silent movie business. As the 1920s roared with the sound of mass manufacturing, Harley returned to Michigan, where, at General Motors’ invitation, he introduced art into the rigid mechanics of automaking. Over the next thirty years, Harley operated as a kind of combination Steve Jobs and Tom Ford of his time, redefining the form and function of the country’s premier product. His impact was profound. When he retired as GM’s vice president of styling in 1958, Detroit reigned as the manufacturing capital of the world, and General Motors ranked as the most successful company in the history of business.     William Knoedelseder tells the story in ways both large and small, weaving the history of the automaker with the histories of Detroit and of the Earl family, and examining the effects of the automobile on America’s economy, culture, and national psyche. As he did in Bitter Brew, Knoedelseder uncovers personal tragedies, corporate battles, and moments of sheer genius, providing rich portraits of this difficult and surprisingly canny genius and of the company—and country—he helped to shape.

When dealing with designers and cars, one would expect more pictures ... but, that some times requires licensing fees to who owns the pictures and such, adds expense. Still, us car guys, we want to see our kinetic art. That said, is a good read. Learn a bit about his early days, who influenced him, how some luck helped. If you are a history buff and not a car guy, you will enjoy the writing. If you are a car guy and not a history buff, still worth a read. Me, I am both. I have been lucky enough to have met many of my childhood and adult heros and, been able to sit one on one and visit with many and, become friends with some. Reading books, written, like this one, make me feel, that I wish I had been able to meet and talk with Harly Earl, one on one, not just about what made him famous but, about things friends talk about. Maybe, like my tea with more sugar, no mustard on my burger. Watch him work and yet, not be talking about work.

Captivating from page one. The author chronicles the improbable rise of Harley Earl from humble beginnings through the birth of the movie culture in Hollywood to the pinnacle of success in America's biggest company. There are hundreds of stories about the temperamental Earl and his marketing genius. This volume sorts them out in an engaging way.

Harley Earl grew to be a legend within General Motors as the head of the styling department. He ruled his designers whimsically and ruthlessly -- even though he himself couldn't draw! But he had his finger on the pulse of the American car-buying public and he gave them what they wanted, including iconic fins on the Cadillac. Thus the title of the book.It is very well written and illustrated with black and white photos. It's a picture of a bygone era and the men and women who peopled it.

An interesting time and astounding group of people creating what we as consumers bought

I'm a car guy, and thought I knew a lot about Harley Earl. "Fins" was a "reset" on what I thought I knew, rich with detail about Earl's family history, upbringing and start in the industry before GM. This is an engaging read that will keep the attention of anyone who enjoys history, but particularly those who love cars, for whom its a "must read".

One of the best "auto" books written. Very well written and easy to follow. Harley Earl was a character bigger than life and made his name in "Fins".

As exciting as Harley Earl's designs were, I was hoping this book would have more pictures that showed his influence.

A good read. Pictures could have been better, though.
