I purchased this book as a reference while working on my DVD Hiking Guide to the Grand Canyon (Jon's DVD Hiking Guides - Grand Canyon National Park) and I found it to be invaluable. If you want to truly experience the place that you are hiking in then you need to be able to do at least some interpretation of the natural world around you. In the Grand Canyon, geology is paramount. This book is excellent in that it has something for everyone. I believe that Geology Majors would not feel that the subject has been "dumbed down", but it also enlightens those (like myself) who have little knowledge of the subject.Knowing about Grand Canyon geology makes the topography come to life. It sparks the imagination as you imagine what the area looked like while each rock layer was being deposited. For those planning a trip to the Grand Canyon I think of this book as an addition to another Grand Canyon hiking book or DVD. Its focus is geology, and leaves out a lot of information that most books or DVDs that are focused solely on hiking contain.
Great resource to have while hiking. I copied the pages for the trails I was hiking and brough the lightweight copies rather than the book. Organized well. Right amount of detail.
I studied this book for 6 months before we hiked to the bottom and back up (of course)the Grand Canyon. Were it not for the information I absorbed from reading, and yes, studying this book we certainly would not have appreciated the grandeur of what we were witnessing. I had not studied Earth Science for 40 years and I found this book spoke simply and intelligently and was well organized. I cannot use enough superlatives to describe how much valuable knowledge was learned in such a short amount of time. Also, my hiking companions truly enjoyed my "sharing" all the knowledge with them as we hiked down and explored for 3 days. Thank you, thank you to the authors!!
You have to be into Geology to understand this fine guidebook. Study it first before you go. And you have to be a Grand Canyon Hiking freak to get to most of these areas. But we found it useful for some of the more popular trails that lead you down from the Village on the South Rim too. We found a lot of fossils that would have been overlooked while hiking down to Dripping Springs. Great Hike. Hope to go back again and again, but timing your hike in the Grand Canyon is chancy. When it is moderate in temperature down below it can be snowing on the rim. When it was sunny and warm on the rim, we almost perished down below at Dripping Springs. The fossils we found were well-described in this guide, and only a mile or so from the trailhead. If you are going to take a river trip, this guide would probably be in the tin box on the boat. Maybe not. Get it just in case. I got a very cheap library edition from Amazon used books and hope to do more with it in the future.
If your hike in the canyon isn't enough stimulation, now you can see your progress through the eyes of time almost 2 billion years ago. Amazing.
I bought this book as research material for my upcoming trip to the Grand Canyon as a volunteer for the park service. I am very familiar with the history of the American southwest but not the geology or ecology, particularly of the Canyon area. As the other reviewers have already noted this book is an invaluable reference for the Canyon geology and is presented in a lively and comprehensive manner for the lay reader. The appendices (A-C) provide a short background course on geology before reading the chapters. I am only about a quarter of the way through the book and I am delighted with the amazing story the authors tell of the rock formations in the Canyon.
I love this book. I got it on Kindle and I liked it so good I went back and got the book. It has a decent explanation of Plate Tectonics (even I could understand it), how rocks are formed, and geologic dating, (and my wife thought I was slow). The story of the formation of the Grand Canyon is, at least to me, extremely interesting. The books give a decent guide to skills and thought needed to begin hiking the GC and a detailed guide to 18 hikes in the GC. You also need a decent field guide to the life in the GC and maybe a book on the human history. Warning, the books on Hopis ancestors can be addictive. I now have close to a dozen and that leads to book on other native Americans and soon your wife with start making noises about doing something beside reading books. (like mowing the lawn, picking up your dirty clothes and all those other things wives want done
I highly recommend this book even if one has no present intention of hiking in the Grand Canyon (though I have to say that, after reading it, I now find it imperative to go there in the very near future). The Introduction and Appendices of this book together comprise the most informative, concise and accessible introduction to a science subject (Geology in this case) I have ever had the pleasure to read. The authors actually make events of the last 4600 million years (!) jump off the page as if they were part of a live action series! It is rare to find a book which transcends its specific topic as this one does. Even my nine-year old was fascinated by the vivid descriptions of the forming of the major features of the North American landscape, the formation and break-up of Rodinia, Pangea, etc., and the many, many layers of history present (and not present!) in the fantastic artwork the Colo. River has carved for all to experience first hand.I have not "road-tested" this book for its specific hiking information. However, I can certainly certainly recommend the book based on its geological and earth history content alone.
