1811-1868, Founder. Born in LaMure, France, he worked at his father's trade as cutler until eighteen when he went to the seminary at Grenoble and was ordained in 1834. While I love "The Real Presence" by Saint Peter Julian Eymard, I am confused by this particular edition by Christian Books Today. It was annotated by Carl Wainwright, S.T.B. There is no biographical information on him at all in the book. When you look at the Glossary, there are terms that appear anti-Catholic such as "procession in all popish countries" under the definition of “Corpus Christi†(p. 208). The definition of “Catholic†includes the following statement, "This term is monopolized by the church, though destitute of the slightest claim to it" (p. 206). For the definition of "Host," it reads, "A term applied to the wafer, after it has been turned into a god by the priest..." (p. 211). Turned into a god? If you are considering purchasing this edition, please also look at a sample page of the bibliography on the Eucharist found on pages 217-236 to see the sources that are listed.In my opinion, Saint Peter Julian Eymard’s work, "The Real Presence" is one of the most beautiful writings on the Eucharist. However, I feel this edition can be extremely misleading by appealing to Catholics with a quote from Pope Saint John Paul II on the back cover as well as a description including a “Glossary of Traditional Catholic terms." Christian Books Today has a "Statement of Faith" on their website that appears Catholic. I feel that they should have either 1) included a biography on the contributor, Carl Wainwright so the buyer could make a more informed choice before purchasing this edition or 2) published an original translation of Eymard's work and left the annotation out of it completely. When I contacted them, the Editorial Team e-mailed a response graciously acknowledging my concerns. They said they would be “acting immediately†upon my observations. Their e-mail seemed to imply that they would be republishing a new edition of this work “in a way that approaches its deserving piety.â€Although I am grateful for their prompt response, I feel that the website description for this edition was inaccurate. I returned 6 of the 7 copies I ordered for a refund (someone had written their name in the seventh copy, so I was unable to return it.) To anyone reading this review, please do not be discouraged! Find an original translation of "The Real Presence" and let Saint Peter Julian Eymard’s words speak for themselves! What a gift this work is for anyone who is looking to understand or deepen their devotion to the Eucharist. Read it with an open heart, especially at Adoration, and it will change your life!
Very informative and enlightening, would recommend it to all who want to expand their knowledge of Gods food for our journey in exile. I loved it.
This book has been one of my spiritual guides during my hour in Adoration each Wednesday. So many beautiful insights from a very holy man. I will definitely be going back to this book throughout my spiritual pilgrimage.
Very beautiful book which I found helpful and encouraging and enlightening. It is very easy to read. I found very helpful for Adoration. Reading a page or two makes Adoration easy. I would highly recommend it.
Although there are several typos this was an awesome book. I also wonder about some of the translation, as some sentences seem awkward...not sure if it is word selection or sentence structure. But that being said, this book is very inspiring and beautiful...it is no wonder St. Peter Julian Eymard is considered saint for the Eucharist.
For those of you who are Catholic I would recommend this book highly. Things are put in such simple thoughts and terms, how much more we appreciate the Real Presence of Our Lord in The Eucharist.
The language and imagery is of its time and place but the intimate focus on the Blessed Sacrament is lovely and inspiring. Well worth the time.
Last night I took this book with me to adoration and had one of the best hours I have ever spent with our Lord.I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! Great reading by itself, awesome for meditation in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Explains so much about the Eucharist, is a must read for a devout Catholic or anyone that wants to know why we adore the Jesus in the Eucharist.
