Knowing that the Catholic Church has survived 2018 years in spite of many bad leaders, including one of the original twelve, gives me comfort in the current crisis. This book reminds me that when we hold on to the teachings given by Christ, early church fathers, and our faithful current leaders, we will not be led astray. There always have been and always will be those leaders who wander away from what Christ taught.
Thank you brother Bennett for reminding me that Jesus himseld said of the Chutch, “... the gates of hell will not prevail.†It is encouraging to see what “bad shepherds†Holy Spirit inspired laity had to endure and overcome in the past. It gives me hope for the future of our bruised and battered Body of Christ.
It's about time a Catholic writer broke popular precedent and wrote openly about the bad popes and bishops that have been recurrent problems throughout Church history.We might well include the situation with this current pope, who seems to be exactly the pope we DON'T need right now. Going with the flow of the culture, he downplays the problem of sexual immorality and prioritizes concerns about global warming, pollution and capitalism, while the family collapses.This author's treatment of problems in the Church was too flippant and unserious for intelligent consideration of such an important subject. And because the book focuses on only bad shepherds, it leaves the reader with a feeling of disgust about the Church, religion in general, and about the ways God works in the world. Interspersing the text with more uplifting material would have provided some needed balance.Also, a broader theological question needs to be asked: why would God allow the Chair of Peter to be filled by such people? Yes, even Jesus had to deal with a Judas, but Judas was not in a position of absolute authority. And do we owe obedience to bad shepherds? Perhaps the Church should clarify a "conscience clause" that makes it clear that no Catholic need ever surrender his right to personal discernment where the authority of a church leader--even the pope-- is concerned. If there is such a clause, then the author of this book should have discussed it, but his flippant and sometimes even silly treatment of the subject matter of this book did not go deep enough to allow for such important discussions. A lost opportunity.
Wonderfully written! Very educational and inspirational to fight back against the evil that continues to attack OUR Church. It very simply reminds the reader of the Church's past and how WE the laity, the faithful, the Church's support network has always guided the Church of our fathers' back into the light and on steady, straight paths.
If you like history told as a if it is family history this is for you.Mr. Bennett takes cardinal historical events and deftly walks you through it regardless of your historical knowledge or religious affiliation.We are living in a time of historical and theological significance. Let's not repeat past mistakes. If you want to have an understanding of what is happening and what is at stake read this book.The authors writing style is at a level that is educational and meant to inform the reader. He doesn't wag his intellectual finger at you but engages the topic at a level that will have you wanting even more information. This is the second book of his that I have read, and have passed this particular one onto others to read. It is worth your time to inform yourself.
Rod Bennett has written parts of Church history in a very readable way, even including some humor. When he talks about the villain shepherds, he is not demeaning or nasty. Rather, he presents information and even explains some of the historical and cultural context that contributed to popes, bishops and priests going bad. He expresses compassion where that is called for. It seemed to me like a fair and accurate rendering of the history it presented.The book also clearly shows the wisdom of the Church and her power and authority, and the government and its power and authority, being separate. As Shakespeare told us plainly, "Power corrupts..." When the Church and politics were enmeshed with each other, power corrupted many in both realms!This book showed me that, not only has the Church weathered other storms -- it has weathered storms as severe, if not more severe, than the storm we are embroiled in now. The Holy Spirit -- the true head of the Catholic Church, does prevail and keeps even the gates of hell from destroying Christ's Church. He always has; He always will. And He very much uses the faithfulness of the lay people of the Church to do so.So my fellow lay people, I highly recommend this book for the encouragement it will give you to persevere and hold tightly to the true teachings of the Church during the current crisis we face. Our prayers and our insistence that the Church be purified and renewed in truth and justice will play an important part in that coming about, as it has in every other crisis the Church has faced in her 2,000 year history.
