Despite the books being a bit short to allow more character development, this has promise. This is a very innocent story, there's NO explicit sex scenes, like some of these outrageous harem novels, if anyone's wondering. There is promise of romance, but in this book, you're not sure who Zara will end up w/. B/c this is book 1, the story is really centered around Zara & Lessie, her big, baby dragon & how their future may unfold together.
The book is good, but it has some issues. In my opinion the main problem is that the author didn’t know what kind of book she wanted to write.Firstly, the tone: it shifts between a mature tale, with themes of identity, belonging, family, war, child prostitution; to a young adult vanilla romance with a bit of dystopian flavors.Second, the setting: the author spends time setting up a treasure hunter plot, detailing the protagonist's powers, her store, and how it works; then moves to the School, gloss over the actual learning and training by telling and not showing; and then at the end moves again, discarding the school.Third, the protagonist: It’s established that she is 23 years old, street smart but also educated; later she acts like a silly teenager with a serious lacking of common sense. The worst is that she thinks something but acts the opposite: she thinks that she shouldn't fall for the first hot guy who crosses her and then she does it; she thinks that something can be a trap and then fall into it. It is very annoying. Also, the other protagonist, the Dragon, has little time in the book, very little actually, so I didn't have the time to know her and care for her. That leads me to the final problem: this is not a complete story. In the vein of the current trend, this is a serial, not a series. The authors must learn the difference (also Amazon should differentiate them). You get part of a story, but without resolution and with cliffhangers until the next installment.
It said, that this book, was a mix of Eragon and the dragon riders of Pern.. But I'd say, it's more like a cross between Raine Benares and Eragon. It's the story that Eragon could have been, but never was due to someone not wanting to delete anything..That said, it's a fine story in it's own right.A young woman is to steal a dragon heart, and ends up getting the hole in hers, finally filled. She finds an egg, of a long gone dragon. But as she touch it, the egg awakens..and cracks.A very fast paced story, with a good plot, easy to read. Fills all your need of how it feels, to belong to a dragon and vice versa. Allthoug I do find our leading lady to lack a bit of the street urchin I sort of understood she was.. And a few other things with some of the characters. But not enough, for me to not, enjoy the story. I will buy the second book, after writing this FYI!
Call of the Dragon is a wonderful fantasy, the story is very different to the usual Dragon books as the main character is a young adult when she bonds with her dragon. This book would be great for teens and up although you will need to find plenty of time to read it because once you start you won’t be able to stop. Definitely worth buying.
As a lover of all things dragon, I found myself engrossed in this novel. I enjoyed the strong lead and quick in-depth plunge into the unique society of this new world. I look forward to the next book.
The characters are well developed. I so enjoy the story I've just bought the next two books. The story is fast past. The only reason I gave it a four instead of a five is the sexual language in the first pages of the book. I must admit it almost made me put it down and go to another book. Thankfully the rest of the book wasn't like that. It's like the author wanted to grab your attention right away. Well she did and maybe not in the right way. I am so glad I stuck with it though. I loved the book.
I hate the downtime waiting for the next book BUT it is definitely worth it!!! Characters are well developed and so fearful conundrums to figure out as you read! Don't miss this series😀
Fun new series on my must read list. Great adventure with a level headed, smart, adventurous heroine. And yum heroes, who, let's face it, helps keep those pages turning. Love the treasure hunter aspect, hope that she doesn't lose that in the sequel. Thanks for a great escape, Ms. Drake!
