About the Author
Joshua Berman's first camping trip was in 1973 at the age of 4 months, in a yellow VW. His parents took him car-camping from West Virginia to northern Maine to Niagara Falls. He never stopped camping for fun, and along the way, found various ways to do it professionally, working for Outward Bound, The U.S. Forest Service, Peace Corps Nicaragua (that was kind of like camping), and for one crazy summer in 2003, as a firefighter with the National Park Service.Joshua has been exploring Colorado for decades. He writes a monthly column for The Denver Post called "Around Colorado." He is also a "Local Expert" for AFAR.com, as well the author of their Colorado guide. These days, Joshua loves cozy car camping with his wife and three daughters as they continue to explore the state together.Joshua is a freelance writer and Spanish teacher based in Boulder. The Moon camping guides are pretty much the gold standard. This one does the job. I used it for traveling in CO so I had some idea what I was getting into, and what amenities I could expect. These guides are pretty much dedicated to public campgrounds so if private sites are your preference this isn't going to be very useful.
This book tells you almost everything you need to know about tent and RV camping in Colorado. I am mostly a tent camper and have an interest in traveling to Rocky and the surrounding area. The information is probably the most recent in book form (5th Edition - May 2016) and it includes pricing at campsites which was very surprising. I read about all the sites I was interested in and came away satisfied.
It's an ok guide but I can tell you they didn't spend much on the printing. I would have like more pictures. There are very few. The ratings differ quite a bit from the "100 best and all the rest" guide which I prefer. They seemed to include other factors not important to me like whether there is good fishing, ATV trails, suitable for big RV's, etc. If you are looking for pure camping I'd take the ratings with a grain of salt.
Well written and very inclusive. I love living in the most beautiful state in the union and spend as much time outdoors as possible. I've gone on five or so trips after purchasing this book and Berman's descriptions have never led me astray or let me down. I've chosen some amazing spots to sleep based on his suggestions for car camping and would recommend anyone else do the same.
This book is a great source to find new places to camp in Colorado. I’m fact there are so many campgrounds that I never knew about that it becomes overwhelming at times, not a bad problem to have. Each campsite is summarized in the same uniform manner so you should know what to expect. It tells you if the campsites are reservable online or first-come-first-serve as well as all other amenities available.
Excellent guide. It is well organized and written in a conversational style. I was able to easily find campgrounds near my location at the end of the day so that I could get my tent set up before dark. Highly recommended.
