Pro's-------1) A robust work - is it complete, is it perfect? Dunno.2) Contains Vocals notation and lyrics, Guitar(s) notation and tab, Bass notation and tab, and drums - makes a great way for your band to get all the beatles songs in one place.3) Price is very reasonable for what you are getting.4) Includes a nice discography of british single, british Albums, American singles, American Albums at the back.Cons------1) Basically the form factor is the con - pages are 10" x 7", the book is 2" thick. Hard bound form factor and 1130+ pages means it won't lay flat on a music stand. More of a "desk reference" than a song book.2) Font and notation is fairly small -- kind of hard to read! Maybe I'm getting old.3) I saw some notation that looked non-standard, for instance references to string bends and so forth were not "typical" guitar notation.General comments------------------This is a great idea, and the authors are to be commended for completing this project and for making this available. I only just received it so I can't comment on the accuracy of the transcriptions so please rely on other reviews for that. Its a massive work and if you are a beatles fan, or have a band that wants to play beatles tunes - this seems like a must have.General improvements would be to increase the page size to that of a typical song book, improving the font size and notation size. Spiral bind it and put it in 3-4 volumes so it would lay flat on a music stand.You get a lot for your money here...a good value. Overall, I really like this because I play guitar, bass, and keyboards and it will be fun to work from these transcripts and lay down and combine tracks.I'd recommend this to any beatles fan that wants to take a shot at some of their songs.
This is a great book. If you are able to play the piano moderately well, you'll be able to make the musicsound better from this book than from one of the books of piano arrangements, although it is true thatyou'll have to work harder at it, because you'll have to pick and choose from the four parts they Beatlesplayed, and find something to play with your left hand and something to play with your right, but it'snot that difficult, and EVERY NUANCE IS THERE, not omitted as in the piano-arrangement books.Somebody worked long and hard to transcribe those recordings, and at this price nobody is getting rich,so we owe those people a vote of thanks!
An amazing effort went into transcribing these songs note-for-note. While we can never know exactly how each note and chord was played during the recording sessions, this behemoth of a songbook comes as close as we'll ever get, and is light years ahead of all those awful, awful "Piano-Guitar Chords-Vocals" songbooks to which we've become accustomed. The only downside here is that the book is physically huge and the pages incredibly thin, simply due to the sheer volume of material presented. This isn't a volume you can crack open and set in front of the piano for sight reading; it almost requires photocopying and spreading the pages out to be of practical use. But the thoroughness and accuracy of the musical information presented here is priceless.
This is a mixed bag. Overall, it's great to have a book with all instrumental and vocal parts. That's amazing. On the other hand; as several other eviews have mentioned, the print is extremely small and not printed very clearly. Very difficult to read. Also, and here's the big one, some of the songs are not correct! Sometimes it will be just a small section that you wouldn't notice, but there are a few songs in the book aren't even close to how it's played.Overall verdict is to buy the book. There are some mistakes that can drive you crazy (hint, YouTube those songs for better lessons) but for the most part, this is a great package and you can learn not just the guitar and piano parts but also all of the orchestral instruments as well.
I can't yet vouch for the accuracy, but the level of detail here is AWESOME! And after the other reviews, I am pleasantly surprised at the size. It is indeed too awkward a format for sight-reading, but the whole page is 7"x10", and the music covers 6"x8". That is, the outer margin is only 5/8" wide. The text and musical staffs are small, but it is not a travesty against typesetting. For studying The Beatles' work, I cannot imagine a more valuable companion to the audio. I frankly can't believe I only paid $50 for it!
As other reviewers have noted, this book is encyclopedic. It covers virtually all of the Beatles' catalog, with strong emphasis on their work after they started writing their own songs. The tab notation is a real help; I do read, but as has been pointed out, while standard notation tells you a note, that note appears in several places on a guitar, and the ability to find the exact voicing they used is essential to getting that sound down. This really shows up in some places where they use unusual versions of a common chord.The only drawback is that the print is on the small side as others have said. The book simply isn't the size of 8 1/2 x 11 (A4) sheet music. The only remedy for that is printing it larger. If you have the hardware around the house to photocopy it and enlarge it, you can do that for the songs you want to work on. That's not exotic, expensive hardware any more, and doing that helps a bit.
This is really a 4.5 rating. Great for fans of the Beatles. The only downside for me is that the print is very small so do not think of this as a book you can put on a music stand and look at while playing. But, with TAB for all the guitar parts and regular scores for vocals and other instruments, you can take your time and figure out any parts that you want. This makes for a good study guide to how the Beatles constructed their hit songs. I'm just a so-so guitar player who likes to strum or finger pick many of their tunes so this was perfect for me.
