These women posessed teh courage and perseverance to brave a dangerous journey of more than a thousand miles, into a harsh wilderness where men sometimes outnumbered them more than ten to one. Many of these women later became successful entrepreneurs, wealthy property owners, or the wives of prominent citizens; one former prostitute married the mayor of Fairbanks and hosted a visit from President Warren G. Harding. Their influence changed life in the Far North forever. About all you can take away from this book is knowledge that prostitution was prevalent in the gold rushes of Alaska. Also that when populations became large enough to establish cities there that a segment of do-gooders would try to have these ladies evicted.
My grampa bought this book in sitka, alaska at old harbor books one summer while we were fishing, and it stayed on the boat until it sank. So i bought another one!Kinda disjointed, short stories about some memorable ladies of the yukon, but all in all, very entertaining.The title of "Diamond Lil" Davenport has been passed down to grampas youngest grandchild, Lillia.
I've read lots of books about the Klondike gold rush. Most of them are stories about the men involved (because, after all, the Klondike was a very masculine world). But this book offered a nice overview of the women who ventured to the far north during this exciting period of our history.
Very detailed with lots of good stories and you'll learn a lot about the Alaska Gold Rush as well. Four stars because it's quite long and sometimes repetitive, still glad I bought it.
I liked the first few chapters but it quickly became repetitive and somewhat dull. Would appreciate more back story, or even thoughts on the psychology and/or sociological factors that drove these women, and/or greater detail about the lives they led.
If one has visited the Yukon, any part of it, you naturally become interested in some of its history. In the summer, this place is where the gods dwell, if one does not count the mosquitoes. In 1898 though, it must of been a little more difficult for those that came in seach of gold. With the modern roads and modern vehicles, it is like driving in the country, however, if one gets about a mile of the regular roads, you go back in time real fast. It must have taken real guts to go to the Yukon in 1898. And the women that did so had to be brave and tough. This book is an interesting tale of real women that were brave and tough, but they also needed to make some money and fast. Some of them made alot of money and some of them suffered greatly. Very interesting reading if one likes true history.
